A 29-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a 34-year-old woman in the neck on Monday afternoon in Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal borough.
The woman was rushed to hospital with critical injuries, but authorities say her condition has since stabilized.
Antoine Gravel appeared in court Tuesday afternoon to face charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a concealed weapon.
He was also charged with a breach of condition of not possessing any weapon or imitation weapon.
The court ordered him not to communicate with the victim.
Montreal Police (SPVM) responded to a 911 call around 3:10 p.m. Monday regarding the stabbing near Saint-Urbain Street and Marie-Anne Street.
Witnesses reported seeing a suspect fleeing the scene shortly after the attack, leading authorities to a nearby area where Gravel was quickly apprehended.
Police have indicated that the suspect may have known the victim, though they have not yet confirmed the exact nature of their relationship.
Initial reports from police
According to Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for the SPVM, the stabbing occurred inside an apartment, with the woman later found outside. “We don’t have much information on the victim, but at this time, we fear for her life,” Brabant said Monday afternoon, before the woman’s condition improved.
The victim had been found with multiple stab wounds to her upper body.
Saint-Urbain Street was temporarily closed southbound towards Mont-Royal Avenue as investigators combed the area, gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
Victim’s condition and ongoing investigation
As of the latest update on Tuesday morning, the victim’s condition has improved. She is now described as stable and out of danger, though her health remains a concern as she continues to receive treatment in hospital.
Police have not yet been able to speak with the victim due to her medical condition.
