Man sentenced in fatal 2022 Plateau shooting of Montreal teen

A 20-year-old was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for the killing of a 17-year-old in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal borough in 2022.

The decision was rendered in Youth court on Friday — as the man was a minor at the time of the fatal shooting.

Amir Benayad was shot in the chest on the evening of Jan. 13, 2022 in the Plateau, after a dispute between two groups of teens.

The suspects immediately ran off. Benayad was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

It was the first homicide of that year in Montreal.

Two youths were originally charged with second-degree murder, but they later pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Their identities are protected because they were underage at the time.

Even though the 20-year-old was a teenager, he was ordered to serve out his sentence in a federal prison for adults.

He has already served just over two years of that sentence.
