SPVM confirms second and third homicides of the year in Montreal

By The Canadian Press

Two men lost their lives on Monday in Montreal, following two armed attacks that occurred late Sunday evening in two different areas of the city.

These are the second and third homicides of the year in Montreal.

The first incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, where a 55-year-old man was reportedly shot.

Resuscitation maneuvers were performed and the man was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the morning, said Raphaël Bergeron, spokesperson for the Montreal Police (SPVM).

No arrests have been made in this case.

The Montreal Police (SPVM) set up a security perimeter near the intersection of Saint-Jacques Street and Beaconsfield Ave. to conduct its investigation. Various witnesses, among others, are to be interviewed by investigators.

Then, about 30 minutes later, another incident – this time in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.

In this second event, a man died on Monday morning. He had been taken to hospital during the night in critical condition, injured by a “sharp object”.

Two individuals present at the scene when the police arrived will be met by investigators to determine their involvement in this event, the SPVM says.

Two individuals were arrested by the police. The first man, 32, was arrested at the scene and transported to a detention centre for questioning, the SPVM said. He appeared before a judge in the evening on a charge of second-degree murder. He will remain in custody until his return to court on February 5.

A 35-year-old man was released after a meeting with investigators. No charges will be laid against him, said spokeswoman Véronique Dubuc.

Crime scene protection was put in place for the investigation on Everett Street, near D’Iberville Street. Police will be particularly interested in determining whether the people involved knew each other.

Shooting in Quebec

Earlier Sunday evening, shots were also fired in Quebec City.

Around 5 p.m., a conflict reportedly took place between several individuals behind a building located near the intersection of Chemin de la Canardière and Rue Bardy.

The people involved had left the scene when the police arrived, but a suspicious vehicle was later found by officers from the Quebec City Police Department (SPVQ).

The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was injured by a projectile and was taken to hospital, where her condition was stable.

A man who was also in the vehicle was met by investigators, but he is not considered a suspect. These two people are linked to the criminal underworld, according to the SPVQ.

Then, on Monday morning, the SPVQ announced that a third person involved in this case was arrested for attempted murder, as well as for discharging and negligent use of a firearm.

The 54-year-old man is currently being held and is expected to appear in court later today, Quebec police said, expecting to make further arrests.
