Service on the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) was temporarily halted early Monday morning due to a “technical issue” that affected both directions.
The network shared on X that it was uncertain when normal service would fully resume. The disruption was caused by a “switch problem,” and delays are expected to continue.
In a statement, REM explained, “The important amount of snow, carried by the wind, is hindering the mechanical operation of our rail switches, which is affecting the movement of the cars. As a response, we have decided to run one car on each side, alternately, making the round trip between Brossard and Central Station. Meanwhile, the shuttle service is maintained to offer an alternative to users.”
Shuttle buses have been deployed to assist commuters with transportation to and from their destinations.
This marks the latest in a series of issues for the REM, which has experienced several disruptions in recent weeks, including three breakdowns in a 24-hour period earlier this month. At that time, the company suggested cold weather might have contributed to the outages.
