Stinger Dome at Concordia University collapses due to snow, no injuries

“We are still assessing damages," says Vannina Maestracci, spokesperson for Concordia University, about the Stinger Dome at Concordia's Loyola campus in NDG that collapsed due to the combined weight of snow from two storms.

The Stinger Dome at Concordia University’s Loyola Campus in NDG started collapsing on Sunday due to the heavy weight of snow from the storms that fell over Montreal that same day – and the one last Thursday. No one was inside at the time.

“The combined weight of the two snow storms (Thursday and Sunday) caused the Dome to collapse and it then suffered a major tear, making it unusable,” writes Vannina Maestracci, spokesperson for Concordia University, in an email statement to CityNews.

“We are still assessing damages. However, since the Dome is put up before winter, it will not be possible to do this again now, in February, meaning that those using the Dome will not be able to do so for the rest of the season. We regret this situation,” she added.

The Stinger Dome, which is used from November to April for various recreational purposes, like sports, camps, and tournaments, is an important part of the Concordia community. The facility is covered by an air-supported structure, which typically provides shelter and protection for participants throughout the colder months – it measures 450 feet by 240 feet.

While the University acknowledges the disruption this closure may cause, they have expressed regret over the situation, emphasizing that the safety and integrity of the facility must take precedence.
