By The Canadian Press

Two peopled are dead after a head-on collision between two snowmobiles in Longue-Rive on Quebec’s Côte-Nord.

Emergency services were notified of the collision around 9 p.m. on Friday. The crash happened on a federated trail running through a controlled harvesting zone (ZEC) in the Haute-Côte-Nord.

“As the area was not reachable, emergency teams had to get there by snowmobile,” said Camille Savoie, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The victims are two men aged 50 and 66, who were not travelling together. They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

“A police officer trained in collision investigation went to the scene to try to understand the circumstances surrounding this event,” Savoie added.

Police have no immediate hypothesis to explain the fatal face-off between the two snowmobilers.

The SQ investigation is continuing.
