Quebec’s Ministry of Education has announced the province’s first School Violence and Bullying Prevention Week, which will take place from March 17 to 21 as part of an initiative to curb school violence and prevent bullying.
The week will be kicked off by a one-day moratorium on all academic activities scheduled for March 17 in all schools across Quebec. An “adapted formula” will be offered for children in kindergarten and first-cycle elementary classes.
“In all Quebec classrooms, students will put down their pencils at the same time and begin a discussion with their teacher on the means to take to prevent episodes of violence and bullying that they have experienced (or are still experiencing) and to reinforce civic-mindedness and respect at school (and in the schoolyard),” said Education Minister Bernard Drainville in a statement Monday.
Each day of the week will address a different theme that aims to highlight how bullying and school violence affects students, school staff and parents. Students and parents alike will engage in various activities like workshops and educational podcasts.
“Respect and civic-mindedness must not only be taught: they must be lived every day. This responsibility begins at home with parents and continues at school,” Drainville said.
The anti-bullying week is part of a broader School Violence Bullying Prevention Plan that was passed in October 2023 and will be implemented across all schools at the start of the 2025-2026 academic year.
