500,000 new trees to be planted in Montreal

By The Canadian Press

The federal Minister of the Environment announced two projects that aim to plant 500,000 new trees on the Island of Montreal over the next five years.

Steven Guilbeault visited the Société de verdissement du Montréal métropolitain (Soverdi), accompanied by Mayor Valérie Plante, on Tuesday to announce the two projects supported in part by the federal “2 billion trees” program.

According to a press release from the Ministry of the Environment, Soverdi will be renewing the “A tree for my neighborhood” campaign in the spring, in partnership with the Regroupement des éco-quartiers.

“This flagship initiative allows Montreal residents to acquire, at low cost, a selection of trees adapted to the urban environment, while benefiting from support for their planting and maintenance.”

This project aims to “plant 200,000 new trees on private and institutional land in Montreal, such as homes, schools, hospitals, industries and businesses.”

In a second phase, Montreal will pilot a project to plant more than 300,000 new trees on public land, as part of the city’s official climate plan.
