Laval blue collar workers announce strike from March 6 to 12

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Laval blue-collar workers are announcing a strike from March 6 to 12, in order to increase pressure on the employer as part of negotiations for the renewal of their collective agreement.

The strike will take place specifically from March 6 at 7:30 a.m. to March 12 at 5 a.m.

The Administrative Labour Tribunal ruled that the agreement reached between the parties regarding the essential services to be maintained during the walkout was sufficient to ensure the health and safety of the public.

The local section concerned of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), affiliated with the FTQ, represents 655 blue-collar workers and 206 casual workers.

Regarding snow removal, the agreement does not provide for anything specific, “but the Tribunal understands that in the presence of significant snow accumulation, the emergency clause provided for in the agreement would apply,” wrote administrative judge Mylène Alder in her decision.

The agreement between the parties provides that in the event of an exceptional situation, “the Union undertakes to provide, upon request and as needed, the personnel necessary and able to carry out the work to deal with this situation.”

The city of Laval has 446,000 inhabitants and occupies an area of 247 km2.
