Court of Appeal: Gilbert Rozon’s trial put on hold

By News Staff

The civil trial against Gilbert Rozon was put on hold pending the Court of Appeal to decide whether it will hear a new motion from the former comedy mogul.

Rozon’s lawyers want to appeal a judge’s decision about what they claim are myths and stereotypes related to victims of sexual assault.

Judge Martin Vauclair ordered the suspension of the trial, until he renders his decision on whether this new motion presented by Rozon’s team can be heard by the Court of Appeal.

Nine women are suing the Just for Laughs founder in a civil case for a total of more than $14 million over alleged sexual abuse.

Anne-Marie Charette, Annick Charette, Patricia Tulasne, Sophie Moreau, Danie Frenette, Lyne Charlebois, Guylaine Courcelles, Marylena Sicari and Martine Roy are claiming damages for sexual assault and rape, among other things.

The parties will be heard Tuesday morning at the Montreal Court of Appeal.

Rozon’s defence will not begin before Quebec’s highest court has ruled.

Rozon is scheduled to testify for several days about the assaults of which he is accused.
