Metalworkers to strike at five railway crossings from March 23 to 25

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

The Metalworkers’ Union has announced a three-day strike at five railway stations from March 23 to 25.

The affected crossings will be those of Tadoussac—Baie-Saint-Catherine, L’Isle-aux-Coudres—Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, Quebec—Lévis, Matane—Godbout and Sorel—Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola.

“The patience of our members has reached its limits,” said Luc Laberge, USW union representative responsible for the maritime sector. Our members have been without a contract for almost two years and have not had a pay raise for three years. We want to encourage the employer to be more serious at the bargaining table.”

The strike will last from 6 a.m. on March 23 to 7 p.m. on March 25.

The relevant local section of the Metalworkers’ Union, affiliated with the FTQ, represents navigation officers and engineering officers at the Société des traversiers du Québec.

In the case of the Tadoussac—Baie-Sainte-Catherine and L’Isle-aux-Coudres—Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive crossings, essential services will have to be maintained. These must be discussed between the employer and union parties, after which the Administrative Labour Tribunal will be called upon to assess whether they will be sufficient to ensure the health and safety of the public.
