Montreal launching pilot project to allow dogs on city buses in 2026

By News Staff

By the end of next year, Montreal dog owners will be able to board city buses along with their pet.

The City of Montreal just passed a motion to allow dogs on city buses as part of a pilot project next year.

The motion calls for the pilot project to be set up by the end of 2026.

In 2022, Montreal launched a pilot project allowing dogs on the metro, with some restrictions, and it’s been a success.

There have been no documented cases of dog bites or damages caused by dogs on the metro, which is encouraging for the pilot project involving buses.

The results show that it’s possible for dogs and public transit to coexist harmoniously, allowing pet owners to leave their cars behind and promote more environmentally friendly options.

Animal advocates like the Montreal SPCA welcomed the city’s recent move, believing it’s a “win-win situation.”

Dogs must be muzzled and leashed on the metro. The same rules would apply to buses.

Toronto and Calgary already allow dogs on their bus networks.

Internationally, London, Amsterdam, Rome, and Berlin are also just a few cities that do the same.
