Unionized lawyers working for the Bar were on strike Wednesday morning, as negotiations with the employer are at a standstill.
The dispute concerns remuneration, workload and pension plan.
“The reason that we are striking today is not just for the salaries,” said Dominique Jolin, Disciplinary Officer, Quebec Bar Association. “We want to be able to protect the efficiently the public and for that we need to have more lawyers that are working with us.”
“We want to be able to interest the best lawyers to work with us,” she added. “What is important is to make sure that these people will be interested by salaries that are the same or almost the same that what is offered in the public with the lawyers working for the government or the public organization.”

These 40 lawyers are represented by a local section of the Union of Professional and Office Employees (SEPB), affiliated with the FTQ.
Last December, union members voted 95 per cent in favour of a two non-consecutive days of strike action to be used at any time deemed appropriate.

The Barreau du Québec, tells CityNews by email that they, “Acknowledged the decision of the union representing its 40 unionized lawyers to launch a one-day strike today, March 26. The Bar will not comment at this time so as not to contravene the ongoing negotiation process.”
