Dr. Vincent Oliva re-elected for third term as president of FMSQ

By The Canadian Press

Radiologist Vincent Oliva has been re-elected as president of the Quebec Federation of Medical Specialists (FMSQ). His new term, which will be his third, will run until 2028.

Dr. Oliva was re-elected by acclamation by delegates representing the 36 medical associations affiliated with the FMSQ, of which he has been president since 2021.

In a press release, Dr. Oliva announced that his priorities for his new term will be improving access to specialized care, renewing the Framework Agreement, and enhancing the expertise of specialist doctors within the health network.

“The renewal of our Framework Agreement remains crucial to enable us to improve access to care for our patients as well as the working conditions of specialist doctors,” he said.

The FMSQ is currently negotiating with the Quebec government to renew its framework agreement, which expired on April 1, 2023. These negotiations are taking place in parallel with those of the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec, whose agreement with the government must also be renewed.

Last week, Health Minister Christian Dubé warned that negotiations with doctors will be “very difficult” in the coming months. He notably stated that he wants compensation to be consistent with access to care.

Dr. Oliva has been an interventional radiologist in academia for 30 years. Before becoming president of the FMSQ, he served for five years as president of the Association of Radiologists of Quebec.
