Rise & shine Montreal: Partial solar eclipse happening early Saturday morning

By News Staff

If you aren’t planning on sleeping in on Saturday you may have a chance to catch a partial solar eclipse happening at sunrise.

While wearing your special eclipse glasses, of course.

At around 6:40 a.m., the moon is going to block out 47 per cent part of the sun over Montreal — and you should be able to see it…if weather permits.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the city, warning of snow and freezing rain this weekend.

A low pressure system is set to bring nearly 5 cm of snow over Southern Quebec overnight.

Light snow ending Saturday morning and feeling like -7°C with the wind chill by the afternoon.

“The Moon will pass in front of and partially block the Sun, casting a shadow on parts of the Northern Hemisphere,” NASA posted on their website. “The central part of the Moon’s shadow, where the Sun would appear completely blocked, misses Earth, so no one will be able to see a total solar eclipse this time.”

“Everyone watching the eclipse,” they added. “Must use proper eye protection or an indirect viewing method to protect their eyes.”
