BEI investigates after man is shot by Montreal police during intervention

By The Canadian Press

The Quebec Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) has opened an investigation after a Montreal Police (SPVM) officer fatally shot a person during an intervention on Saturday evening.

A preliminary summary from the BEI, released Sunday, indicates that officers received a call around 9 p.m. about a person with a firearm in a multi-unit building.

Police arrived at the scene a few minutes later and made contact with the person, according to a BEI press release.
The watchdog says police shot the person, who was injured.

The police then called an ambulance and provided first aid to the person, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The BEI said six investigators had been assigned to the case, adding that no further information was available.

The BEI investigates all cases where a person, other than a police officer on duty, dies, suffers serious injury, or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while in police custody.
