Hydro-Québec’s electricity rate increase takes effect today.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) notes that, SMEs will suffer the largest increases of all customer groups.
Their rate increase will be 3.6 per cent, while large businesses will see a 1.7 per cent increase.
Residential customers are protected by the Legault government, which limits their rate increase to 3 per cent.
“SMEs are no longer Hydro-Québec’s cash cow; they’ve become the butt of the joke! The legal framework ensures that large businesses and citizens are protected. And what about SMEs in all this? They have to dip into their already empty wallets,” said François Vincent, CFIB’s Vice-President for Quebec in a news release on Tuesday.
The Legault government had blocked the planned residential electricity rate increase at 3 per cent.
The Cabinet adopted a decree to this effect last week, while the Régie de l’énergie had decided on a 3.6 per cent increase.
However, Legault had indicated that he opposed the Régie’s proposal.
