One arrest after trans rights march in Old Montreal

One person was arrested after the “trans day of vengeance,” a march for trans rights, ended Monday night in Montreal.

The demonstration in the Ville-Marie borough began at 7:30 p.m. at Place Vauquelin on Notre-Dame Street near Place Jacques-Cartier — with Montreal police (SPVM) officers following the march.

At around 8 p.m., the SPVM said that some marching began setting off pyrotechnics — and later began throwing objects and paint at officers.

To disperse the crowd, the SPVM report using tear gas, but explained that many tried to regroup. One person was then arrested for obstructing officers.

The demonstration was considered over by 8:30 p.m. and no injuries were reported, Montreal police told CityNews.

They added that two business windows and a car were damaged.

Urgences-santé confirmed to CityNews that they had three specialized team vehicles and a supervisor onsite amid the march.

They said they evaluated one patient, but the person was not transported to hospital.
