Quebec reaches agreement with Federation of Resident Physicians

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Quebec says that they’ve come to terms with the Federation of Resident Physicians to renew their agreement.

It concerns 400 resident doctors in the medical faculties of the universities of Montreal, Laval, Sherbrooke and McGill.

It will be in force for seven years, from 2021 to 2028.

The office of Treasury Board President Sonia LeBel indicated Tuesday that this agreement in principle has been approved by the members of the federation, but the latter has not yet confirmed.

Minister LeBel believes that this agreement “will allow better access to care for the Quebec population, while improving the working conditions of resident physicians.”

The dispute mainly concerned remuneration and workload, with the resident doctors seeking a day off after seven consecutive days of work.

The Quebec Federation of Resident Physicians stated at the end of last year that it was prepared to launch a strike, if necessary, at the beginning of 2025. The Administrative Labour Tribunal had also issued several decisions in February on the essential services to be maintained – should a strike actually be called.
