6 sick trees in La Fontaine Park being cut down this month

Six diseased trees in Montreal’s La Fontaine Park will be cut down over the next two weeks.

The six Carolina poplars will be chopped down sometime between now and April 22.

Two more diseased poplars will also be removed from the park within the next three years.

The City of Montreal says it’s due to their deteriorated condition and the risk they pose to public safety.

“Removal of the affected structures is the only possible intervention,” the city said.

In the fall, the six stumps will be removed, and six red oaks will be planted in their place.

“This native species was chosen because of its good tolerance to urban conditions, its spreading crown, its large size at maturity, its shade tolerance, and its beautiful fall colour,” the city explained.

The city says all 20 poplars in La Fontaine Park received a diagnostic assessment in the fall using specialized tools, and multiple trees were determined to have fungus growth that was leading to large cavities.
