Quebec targets Trump in new ‘shop local’ ad campaign

The provincial government is turning to clever word play to convince Quebecers to buy local products in the context of a trade war with the United States.

The new advertising campaign from the Quebec government takes a slight jab at U.S. President Donald Trump.

“By buying Quebec-made products, we can’t go wrong,” is the translated version of the campaign’s message.

But in the original French, “on ne se trompe pas” (we can’t go wrong) is written with a “u” instead of an “o” – an obvious reference to Trump.

“More than ever, buying Quebec products is important for our businesses and our regions,” Quebec Premier François Legault wrote on X. “At the grocery store, we look for Quebec foods. In stores, we buy local products. This summer, we’re supporting our tourism industry by traveling here. And we’re choosing Quebec culture.

“Because when you buy Quebec products, you can’t go wrong.”

Canada was left off the list of nations that received a 90-day pause on Trump’s tariffs. American tariffs and duties on cars, steel and aluminum are set to remain in effect against Canada.
