Man granted bail after fatal altercation stemming from car collision in Montreal North, charges reduced

By News Staff

The Montreal man who allegedly caused the death of a motorist during a possible road rage incident in Montreal North on Tuesday was granted bail.

35-year-old Justin Philip Cockburn is no longer charged with second-degree murder, but rather with manslaughter.

He was back in court Friday in connection with the altercation that led to the death of 67-year-old Antonio Zaccagna.

At around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the corner of Gouin East and Garon, Zaccagna allegedly hit a pedestrian with his car.

Police say the victim did not suffer serious injuries during the impact.

But a witness to the scene, Cockburn, approached to yell at the driver, who then got out of his vehicle to confront the witness.

The two then began to fight and at some point, the 67-year-old man collapsed.

An investigation is ongoing to shed light on exactly what happened.

Cockburn is due back in court on June 16.
