Indefinite closure of Jeanne-Mance entrance at Place-des-Arts metro: STM begins maintenance work

By News Staff

Montreal’s public transit agency (STM) announced an indefinite closure of the Jeanne-Mance entrance from the Place-des-Arts metro station after an inspection noted “significant concrete deterioration” of its slab and beams.

During a visual inspection of the station, the STM said that this deterioration was likely caused by de-icing salt and water over the years.

“We will act quickly to complete the necessary work, but this incident reminds us of the importance of taking care of our infrastructure,” said Éric Alan Caldwell, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

“The needs are urgent, and that is why we continue to request the necessary funds to maintain our assets in order to maintain a reliable and efficient metro network.”

The Annual Infrastructure Management Plan (PAGI) confirmed that the proportion of STM assets in poor condition has jumped from 23 per cent to 39 per cent by 2025 — Place-des-Arts station receives a “D” rating, according to the STM.

Place-des-Arts station remains open and accessible from three other entrances.

“The Bleury entrance at Place-des-Ars station, closed to enhance the sense of security on the metro, will reopen on Monday while minor renovations are being completed,” the STM said.

Approximately 19,000 passengers pass through this station on an average weekday.
