Quebec Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette announced an $80 million agreement with the Chambre des notaires and the Barreau du Québec, through 2029, to provide Quebecers with better access to justice.
This funding will be used to help people who represent themselves in court – something that’s become a growing phenomenon.
“In the context (…) rapid access to the advice of a lawyer or notary and to legal information is becoming essential,” a statement from the province stated.
“Teams of legal experts from community justice centres will be deployed to several courthouses across Quebec to help and support citizens when and where they need it.”

The assistance will be provided primarily for family, civil, and youth protection cases, “the areas where self-representation is most prevalent.”
The agreement will also allow for the deployment of more lawyers and notaries in community organizations “to enhance the provision of front-line services.”
“These include, for example, consumer or tenant rights organizations, or organizations supporting victims or providing services to families and children.”
A call for projects is also being launched to promote access to justice.
