BEI investigates after person shot by Montreal police during intervention

By News Staff

Quebec’s police watchdog, the BEI, opened an investigation after a Montreal Police (SPVM) officer is said to have shot a person during an intervention overnight in Ahuntsic.

It all started around 12:40 a.m., when a call came into 911 about a person causing a disturbance, at the corner of Saint-Michel Blvd. and Sauvé Street.

“Police arrived on the scene around 12:47 a.m. and attempted to contact the person. The police found that the person was armed and [he] allegedly pointed his firearm at the police officers,” the BEI said in a press release.

At around 1:05 a.m., the police reportedly fired in the direction of the person, who was wounded.

First aid was provided by police officers on the scene, and the man was transported to hospital.

“The person’s condition is stable,” said Jérémie Comtois, a communications advisor for the BEI, to CityNews on Friday morning. “There is a parallel investigation that was launched by the Sûreté du Québec.”

Seven BEI investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the intervention.

“The mission of the Independent Investigation Bureau (BEI) is to shed full light on the facts surrounding the police intervention. The BEI investigates all cases where a person, other than an on-duty police officer, dies, suffers a serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while in the custody of a police force.”

No further information is available at this time.

The BEI is asking anyone who may have witnessed this event to contact it via its website.
