Montreal police officers from the Eclipse Squad – which is a specialized unit within the SPVM dedicated to combating organized crime and, more recently, gun violence – came upon a situation as it unfolded on Sainte-Catherine and de la Montagne overnight.
At around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, officers saw an individual open fire – shot a man in his 30s – and then flee on foot.
“The suspect was chased by our officers and quickly controlled,” said SPVM spokesperson, Mariane Allaire-Morin.
A 48-year-old man was arrested onsite and will be questioned by investigators later today.
At this time, the SPVM do not know the link between the victim and the suspect.
As for the victim, police say that he suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
“The crime scene is now protected and our investigators are on their way to analyze the scene and try to understand all the circumstances surrounding this event,” Allaire-Morin explained.
An investigation is ongoing.
