Seaplane crashes into Richelieu River

A seaplane crashed into the Richelieu River late Friday morning in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, located in the Montérégie region.

According to police, emergency calls were received shortly after 11 a.m., reporting that an aircraft had overturned in the water near Montée Robert.

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found the aircraft upside down in the river.

There were two people on board. One occupant managed to swim to shore, while the other is said to have been trapped in the seaplane.

The small aircraft remained partially submerged for over an hour before being retrieved with the assistance of a tow truck.

Officials say there is no alleged criminal activity believed to have contributed to the incident.

No information has yet been released regarding the identities of the two individuals on board.

Officials have yet to confirm a death in this incident.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified and is expected to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
