Corbeille de Pain marks 10 years of Empty Bowls Fundraiser to fight food insecurity in West Island

"Raise awareness about hunger," said Virginie Grenier-Deschênes, Corbeille de Pain's executive director, as the non-profit marks 10 years of its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Saturday in Pointe-Claire.

The non-profit Corbeille de Pain, which supports West Island community members facing food insecurity, hosted its annual fundraiser in Pointe-Claire on Saturday, with this years  event expected to raise $20,000.

“We are celebrating the 10th year anniversary of our empty bowls fundraiser, so that’s like this global movement of organization and groups, collective trying to raise awareness about hunger with this concept of like selling pottery bowls, handmade pottery bowls with soup,” said Virginie Grenier-Deschênes, executive director of Corbeille de Pain. “The funds we raise will have an impact across our three main programs, so the community kitchens, the community gardens, and the solidarity market.”

In addition to soup and live music, the 10th edition featured a pottery bowl decorating activity, made possible by the Dorval Potters’ Guild. The executive director invited Montrealers to support their upcoming seasonal markets starting in July, as a way to carry the mission forward beyond the Empty Bowls event.

“We invite people to come at our markets as well because this season begins like the first week of July,” said Grenier-Deschênes. “We have our markets. That’s one way to help us, three four months until the end of October.”
