Quebec announces $25 million for greening infrastructure

By Stéphane Blais, The Canadian Press

Quebec’s Environment Minister announced $25,374,755 in financial support to twelve municipal organizations for greening and green infrastructure projects.

These initiatives are to be carried out in several regions of Quebec. They aim to increase community resilience in the face of climate change.

Minister Benoit Charette took advantage of his presence at the Montreal Climate Summit to make the announcement.

“This is the OASIS program that we unveiled in 2022, with additional funding. We’ve invested just over $30 million, for a total of $85 million eligible over the coming months. Again, this is dedicated to the municipal sector to ensure that cities can become more resilient,” explained the Minister.

The majority of the funding announced Tuesday is intended for the City of Montreal.

“This represents $22 million for the City of Montreal, specifically to better manage rainwater and combat heat islands. It’s a program that is highly valued by the municipal sector,” Charette told reporters.

“In recent years, we have increasingly observed and experienced the impacts of climate change on our territory. Fortunately, greening solutions and green infrastructure are among the most effective ways to strengthen our resilience and cope with climate hazards, such as torrential rains and heat waves,” the minister said.
