Union members at Héma-Québec lab in Quebec City strike

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Around 40 union members at the Héma-Québec laboratory in Quebec City are on strike Thursday and Friday.

These are members of the Alliance of Professional and Technical Personnel in Health and Social Services (APTS), who work in the laboratory.

The strike runs from Thursday, 12:01 a.m. to Friday, 11:59 p.m.

The union reports that the dispute is mainly about parity with what was granted to employees in the public and parapublic sectors.

As Héma-Québec operates in the field of collection, transport and distribution of blood, its derivatives and human tissues, and therefore in the field of health, essential services are provided.

The agreement between the parties, which was ratified by the Administrative Labour Tribunal, provides that all employees usually on duty will be present and will work during part of their normal working hours, according to a percentage of 80 per cent.

Asked to comment, Héma-Québec management said it was satisfied with the agreement reached between the parties regarding essential services maintained during the strike. However, it declined to comment on the content of the dispute with the APTS.

“Héma-Québec is currently awaiting feedback from the union to confirm negotiation dates. We, of course, hope to continue discussions with a view to reaching an agreement,” she said.
