Voters in federal riding of Terrebonne ready to go back to the polls if called on

"I don’t want to vote again, but I will," says one Terrebonne resident ready to go back to the polls if called on after the Bloc Québécois said it would launch a legal challenge of the controversial election results in the federal riding.

After the Bloc Québécois said it would launch a legal challenge of the controversial election results in the federal riding of Terrebonne Thursday, voters CityNews spoke to there say they’re ready to go back to the polls.

The riding flipped back and forth on election night, finally ending with a Liberal win after a vote validation days later — but then a judicial recount last Saturday determined the Liberals won by one vote.

However, it later emerged that a Bloc voter’s mail-in ballot was received late, due to incorrect postal information on the envelope.

But that envelope was printed by Elections Canada itself.

Elections Canada has admitted the error and says at least five other ballots had similar issues, but the recount result is final.

The Bloc intends to challenge the matter in court.

“For me it’s bad, but it’s not the fault of that person,” said one Terrebonne resident. “It’s Election Canada who made a mistake. And we say every year, every vote comes. If it’s true, we have to do it again. And it’s not one vote, it’s five. I don’t want to vote again, but I will.”

“If we have to go back to the polls we’re going to vote even more en masse,” added another. “And I’m going to vote Liberal, just like before.”

“Absolutely we have to go vote again if nothing works,” said another resident on Friday. “And they arrive with the same count again we just go vote again no problem.”

“Yes, I think it’s a good idea for a new election,” said another.

“Everybody makes a difference for the vote,” he added. “So for me it’s the same thing, so I know my vote was very important.”
