Quebec residential construction: strike Wednesday if APCHQ refuses to consult members

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

L’Alliance syndicale de la construction is issuing an ultimatum to the employers’ association: a strike in the residential construction sector will begin Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. unless it agrees to submit the union’s latest proposal to a vote among its members.

L’Alliance syndicale, which represents all construction unions, announced this Friday morning.

More specifically, the Alliance is asking the Association des professionnels de la construction et de l’habitation du Québec (APCHQ) to respond by noon on Monday as to whether it will agree to submit the union’s latest proposal to a vote among its members.

The Alliance estimates that the APCHQ would be able to consult its members by secret ballot by June 6.

If the APCHQ refuses to submit the union’s proposal to its members, an unlimited general strike in the residential construction sector would begin on May 28 at 12:01 a.m., the Union Alliance warns.

Its five member unions had already issued a mandate for an indefinite strike, which they supported by a majority of 83.8 per cent.

The three other sectors of the construction industry, namely the industrial sector, civil engineering and roads, and institutional/commercial, also reached a settlement with the same union alliance.
