The group Moelle Épinière et Motricité Québec, alongside partners that include the Montreal police force, is working to promote respecting accessible parking spaces in the city.
As part of the Quebec Week for People with Disabilities, they announced an action plan to bring awareness to the public, including businesses and motorists.
And to get their attention, they are giving out fake parking tickets to those parked in disabled spots without a permit.
“We give the drivers that are parked in reserved parking a fake ticket,” said Anabelle Grenon-Fortin, an advocacy and community organizer with the group.
“It’s a very, very, very important tool for them to be able to go work and to be able to have social activities. So, if they cannot use those parking, it’s very complicated for them to feel free and secure to go out and live their life.”

Every year, around 2,500 tickets are given out to those who park in reserved spaces without a disabled parking permit, according to the SPVM’s road security advisor, Michael Brochu. The fine can be over $300.
This week, Montreal police and other forces across the province will step up surveillance for these reserved parking spots.
“We will patrol every parking space until June 7 to verify that the respect of the handicapped spots are mainly correct,” said Brochu.

Community groups, municipalities and citizens will be organizing activities to promote the respect for accessible parking spaces throughout the month of June.
“Please let those space for the handicapped available,” said Brochu. “It will be a good contribution for their safety.”
