Armed 40-year-old man arrested in Saint-Hippolyte

Police operation that took place Monday morning in Saint-Hippolyte, in the Laurentians, is over. An armed man had barricaded himself in a residence, but he eventually surrendered to police.

According to information provided by the Sûreté du Québec, the intervention began around 3 a.m. in the Lac-Morency Road area, where gunshots were heard.

A person then barricaded themselves inside a residence. Several hours later, around 8 a.m., the person surrendered to the police.

Police arrested the man, who is in his 40s, shortly before 9 a.m. Weapons were seized at the man’s residence, and he was taken to hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. 

The Sûreté du Québec specifies that the event caused no injuries, either during the initial events or during the police operation.

The person of interest in this event will be met to determine the next steps.

On Facebook, the mayor of Saint-Hippolyte, Yves Dagenais, posted a video to inform citizens that the situation was under control.

“Everything is OK, thank you for following the instructions,” he said.

The municipality of Saint-Hippolyte, which has approximately 11,000 inhabitants, is located in the MRC of La Rivière-du-Nord.
