Man who fell into Lachine Canal following altercation has died

The 39-year-old man, who fell into the Lachine Canal on Wednesday following an altercation with a 42-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries Thursday, the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) confirmed.

Emergency services were called around 4:55 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Saint-Ambroise Street and Turgeon Street.

Firefighters managed to pull the man from the water. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s Major Crimes Section, “because a man was killed,” said Officer Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the SPVM.

He added that the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation have not yet been “established.”

The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) arrested the other man involved in the altercation. No charges have been filed against him yet regarding the victim’s death.

He currently faces other charges related to the incident, including assault on a police officer, for which he appeared in court Thursday afternoon.
