The body of a 20-year-old man who drowned at Verdun Beach on June 7 has been recovered.
Montreal police confirmed on Tuesday that they were alerted last Saturday about the body being spotted in the river near Verchères, an off-island suburb located on the bank of the St. Lawrence River on the South Shore.
SPVM were called to Verdun Beach on the evening of June 7, after reports of a man taking part in a sporting activity in the St. Lawrence River “appeared to be in distress.”
SPVM divers, along with teams from Montreal’s fire department and the Coast Guard, conducted searches in the water and along the shore but were unable to find the victim.
A father and son fishing near Verchères reportedly spotted the body on June 14 and notified police.
Montreal police believe the incident was not criminal in nature.
A coroner will investigate to determine the exact cause of death.
