An underwater drone helped bring closure Wednesday in the search for three people missing since last Friday night’s Airmedic helicopter crash in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region.
The drone—provided by the Canada Border Services Agency—confirmed that a mass detected in Lac Watshishou, north of Natashquan, was the downed helicopter.
The Sûreté du Québec says divers located and recovered the bodies of the two missing crew members and the patient aboard the aircraft, bringing the search operation to an end.
Airmedic issued a statement Wednesday night expressing profound sadness. It says the victims “lost their lives while attempting a rescue—a gesture that reflects their passion, their vision, and the meaning they gave to their profession.”
The company says it is entering a time of remembrance and will honour the victims in the days ahead.
The formal identification of the deceased will be released by the Quebec Coroner’s Office, with family consent.
One male crew member survived the crash and was hospitalized last week with non-life-threatening injuries.
Airmedic continues to suspend operations and is offering support to its employees.
