Man found dead in tent on vacant lot in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough

A man was found dead Wednesday afternoon in a tent on a vacant lot near Walter-Stewart Park, in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough.

Around 1 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting a possible death in a tent located near the intersection of Larivière and Dufresne Streets.

A strong odour could be smelled on the scene.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the man inside the tent. His identity remains unknown.

Investigators set up a perimeter at the scene to analyze the circumstances surrounding the death.

Authorities say there is currently no indication that the death is linked to any criminal activity.

The investigation has been transferred to the coroner’s office, which will work to identify the man and determine the cause and circumstances of his death.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante posting to social media on Thursday, writing: “It is a tragic death; no one should die like this. It is urgent to equip cities with more medical resources and appropriate facilities to provide the safety and dignity that everyone deserves. I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this homeless man. The coroner will shed light on the circumstances.”
