Growing support for Quebec independence among younger voters

A CROP survey conducted in July and August found that the younger generation, 56 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds are now in favour of sovereignty in Quebec.

The data comes from a CROP survey obtained by La Presse, that was conducted with 1,000 respondents.

The figures are similar to those during the second referendum in 1995.

Comparable data was also obtained by a Léger poll last June that also showed enthusiasm for sovereignty among young people.

The CROP survey found that among Francophones, 50 per cent are in favour of sovereignty, compared to only 22 per cent of non-French speakers.

Those living in the Greater Montreal area showed 38 per cent support for sovereignty, compared to 45 per cent in the Quebec City area and 49 per cent in the rest of the province.

Overall, 44 per cent of survey respondents support the idea of Quebec independence, while 56 per cent are against it.

Among 35 to 54-year-olds, support for an independent Quebec is at 44 per cent.

The number decreases by 37 per cent among those aged 55 and over, the survey indicates. The survey shows that this age group is the least supportive about sovereignty in Quebec.
