72-year-old assaulted on Montreal metro platform: police

By News Staff

A 72-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after an alleged assault on a metro platform, according to Montreal police (SPVM).

“Around 1:30 p.m. police received several calls to 911 concerning a fight on the platform of the Pie-IX metro station, in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough,” explained Manuel Couture, SPVM spokesperson.

Initial information suggests that a conflict started on a metro train and eventually moved to the patrol station platform.

“A fight ensued and the victim was struck several times in the upper body by the suspect who fled before police arrived.”

The victim was sent to hospital with severe injuries and as of late afternoon police still feared for his life.

On Wednesday afternoon, the victim remained in critical condition.

“The suspect has still not been arrested and the crime scene is currently being set up,” added Couture. “Investigators will be interviewing witnesses and reviewing video [footage] in an attempt to learn more about the origin of the conflict and obtain a description of the suspect in order to proceed to [their] arrest.”

Metro trains did not stop at the Pie-IX station from about 1:55 p.m. to about 3 p.m. while police investigated.

No arrests have been made so far.

Officers were at the metro Wednesday morning to reassure users and look for any leads.

The STM says it was an isolated and rare incident. “The Montreal metro is safe,” says a spokesperson.

“The STM is collaborating with the police investigation currently underway. Special attention is being paid to the station by security personnel, our constables, and ambassadors.”
