Quebec man wins $46M Lotto 6/49 jackpot

Quebec’s newest millionaire has been crowned after winning the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball Jackpot of $46,000,000 on Aug. 27.

The winner, Claude Boucher, is a resident of the Bois-Francs region in Centre-du-Québec.

Boucher is a long-time employee of Cégep de Victoriaville and has been playing the same Lotto 6/49 numbers for years.

He purchased the winning ticket online through the Loto-Québec website.

“I was scrolling quickly and I thought, ‘$46,000 isn’t too bad! But what are all those zeros? Oh, it’s $46,000,000,’” Boucher explained, saying he checked the numbers on his email the day after the draw. He adds he waited a few hours before telling his wife.

As for what he plans on doing with his winnings? Boucher says he’s now thinking about early retirement, and possibly a trip to Switzerland, where he and his wife lived in the 80s.

Boucher wasn’t the only lucky lotto winner to end August.

“The last week of August was exceptionally lucky for Quebecers!” said Isabelle Jean, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Lottery Games at Loto-Québec. “The Grande Vie lottery game top prize of $1,000 a day for life was won twice in Québec, in addition to the $46,000,000 jackpot we’re handing out today.”
