Montreal blue-collar workers vote on pressure tactics and a general strike

By The Canadian Press

Montreal’s blue-collar workers were called to a special general assembly on Saturday morning to vote on a strike mandate that could go as far as an unlimited general strike.

Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which is affiliated with the FTQ, were invited to attend the meeting at the Palais des congrès de Montréal starting at 9:30 a.m.

The union was expected to provide an update on negotiations to renew the collective agreement, followed by a presentation of a strike mandate that could include an unlimited walkout.

CUPE Local 301, which represents 6,600 City of Montreal workers, says it hopes the move will put more pressure on the city at the bargaining table.

Montreal, meanwhile, is grappling with major financial challenges and is looking to cut costs.
