A significant disruption hit Montreal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light-rail network on Wednesday, leaving passengers stranded as trains came to a sudden halt in the midst of their commutes.
The outage, which began around 5:50 p.m., is under investigation. The CDPQ Infra explained that the technical incident resulted in an exceptional loss of communication across the entire network.
“This incident disrupted communication with trains and the system that allows communication with passengers on board the cars,” CDPQ Infra spokesperson, Francis Labbé, told CityNews.
“Teams are investigating the cause of this outage,” he added. “And will make the necessary corrections.”

While operators were working on restoring service, emergency personnel were deployed across the network to assist passengers.
According to the CDPQ Infra, there were six cars on the network, and they had to be moved in sequence to allow passengers to exit, which made the operation more complex.
A train filled with commuters was seen stalled just before 7 p.m. near the REM’s L’Île-des-Sœurs Station — and was reportedly still on the tracks at 8:30 p.m.
“We understand that the situation experienced by passengers on board these cars was very difficult, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” said Labbé. “We assure you that all required personnel will be deployed to determine the cause of this outage and prevent a similar situation from recurring.”
Service is operating normally this morning.
