New bridge connecting Île Bizard to Montreal will be called the Guy Lafleur Bridge

After seeing a highway named in his honour two years ago, the “Démon Blond” will now have a bridge named after him.

The City of Montreal announced on Wednesday that the new bridge connecting Île Bizard to the Island of Montreal will be named the Guy Lafleur Bridge.

In May 2023, Premier François Legault traveled to Thurso, in the Outaouais region, the hometown of the former Montreal Canadiens’ number 10, to announce that Highway 50 will now be called the Guy Lafleur Highway.

On Wednesday, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante unveiled the name of the new bridge in the presence of friends and family members of Lafleur.

This distinction stems from the fact that the legendary hockey player lived on Île Bizard for nearly 30 years, where he was recognized as “an active and caring citizen,” in Plante’s words.

An unparalleled record

The best junior player of his era with the Quebec Remparts, he was drafted by the Canadiens, with whom he dominated the National Hockey League (NHL) rinks for 14 seasons, before retiring for the first time in 1984 after winning five Stanley Cups and numerous individual trophies.

He remains the Canadiens’ all-time leading scorer and second-leading goal scorer behind another legend, Maurice Richard.

He returned to the game in 1988 with the New York Rangers before joining the Quebec Nordiques in 1989, with whom he finished his career in 1991.

Lafleur passed away in April 2022, having received the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.

His number 10 jersey was retired by the Canadiens, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame.
