Man killed in 5-alarm fire in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal

A five-alarm fire that broke out in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday left a 77-year-old man dead, with emergency responders working through the morning to contain the blaze.

The blaze engulfed a three-storey residential and commercial building located at the intersection of Mont-Royal Avenue East and Saint-André Street.

Officials say the fire started on the third floor and spread to the roof. Around 150 firefighters were trying to tame the flames. By 8:30 a.m., the fire had been extinguished, officials say.

Montreal police and paramedics were also at the scene to assist.

Power was cut off in the area as a safety precaution. 

One person was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, the investigation is ongoing.
