The second strike by maintenance workers at the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) began Monday morning, disrupting bus and metro service.
The transit agency’s 2,400 maintenance workers will be on strike for 14 days, but this walkout is more complex than the previous one, which took place in June.
This time, maintenance workers are refusing to work overtime during the 14 days, which will be compounded by service interruptions outside of rush hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The precise hours for essential services are posted on stm.info/greve.
Information is also available in metro stations, and additional staffing has been added.
Last week, STM Executive Director Marie-Claude Léonard announced that the CSN union’s wage demands exceed the STM’s ability to pay by $300 million.
According to her, this demand “far exceeds” the STM’s five-year financial framework. If it agreed to comply, the transit authority would have to reduce its bus service by 10 per cent, she stated.
Caught in a difficult financial situation, management is offering its employees a 12.5 per cent wage increase over five years.
In response, the union criticized management for seeking to further increase its use of subcontractors.
The STM provides 1.1 million trips per day. It operates a fleet of 1,849 buses and 999 metro cars. Its metro network consists of 68 stations; its bus network consists of 223 routes.
