The STM maintenance workers’ strike continues into Friday, causing challenges for Montrealers with Friday plans as there’s ongoing disruptions to both metro and bus services.
This rotating strike, which began earlier this week, will remain in effect until Oct. 5, affecting approximately 2,400 workers.
On strike days—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—metro service will operate only during three limited time windows:
- Morning: 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Afternoon: 2:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Late Night: 11 p.m. to closing
Outside of these peak hours metro service will be unavailable, leaving commuters without metro options during key parts of the day.
Bus service is also impacted on Fridays, with STM buses running on a reduced schedule.
No STM buses will be running between 9:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. as well as between 6 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the weeks of Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. Paratransit services remain unaffected and continue to operate as usual.
The timing of these disruptions might be challenging for those with Friday night plans, such as the thousands of fans attending tonight’s Alouettes game.
With metro service unavailable between 5:45 p.m. to 11 p.m., many can face complications getting to and from the Percival Molson Stadium to watch the city’s team go against the Calgary Stampeders.
On their website, the Alouettes explained that there will be a shuttle service operating between Place-des-Arts and the stadium from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
As for after the game, shuttle service will not be offered and bus and metro services will not resume until 11 p.m.
Aside from cars and BIXI, fans can also take taxis — the Alouettes explained that Téo Taxi is set to offer enhanced service tonight for the game, with discounts to be offered.
The STM is urging passengers to consult their website for updates on schedules and to allow extra time for travel, given the service disruptions.
Negotiations between the STM and maintenance workers remain at a standstill. Key issues at the heart of the strike include disputes over untraditional work schedules and salary increases.
