Futur Montréal candidate facing domestic violence charges

A candidate running for a new municipal party in Montreal has been charged with assault in a case of domestic violence.

Dani Muzungu, Futur Montréal’s candidate for the Snowdown district, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at an apartment in Hampstead.

Officers were called to the home and reportedly found an injured woman. She was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Muzungu was charged with eight counts including aggravated assault; assault causing bodily harm by choking, suffocating, or strangling; uttering threats.

He remains in custody and the file is scheduled for the bail hearing on Friday.

In a statement to CityNews, Futur Montréal said that they are “shocked and deeply disappointed by the situation involving one of its candidates in the Snowdon district.”

They added that as soon as they were informed, they acted immediately.

“This person has been removed from our team and no longer represents our party or our values,” they said in the statement.

They also explained that Elections Montréal was informed to remove him from their ticket.

“We want to be clear: such behavior has no place in our organization or in public life,” said Jean-François Kacou, mayoral candidate of Futur Montréal. “I went personally in Snowdon to take down his posters last night. We have zero tolerance for such behaviours. Our thoughts and prayer are with the victim.”
