Woman seriously injured after dog attack in Saint-Leonard

“She fell unconscious on the ground at one point,” said Raphaël Bergeron, a spokesperson for the Montreal police, describing the moment a woman was attacked outside a mechanic’s garage in Saint-Leonard.

A 45-year-old woman is expected to survive her injuries after being attacked by three dogs in Saint-Leonard on Wednesday morning, according to Montreal police (SPVM).

The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. as the woman was walking along Creusot Street toward a mechanic’s garage. SPVM spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron said the dogs came out of the business and attacked her. It’s still unclear whether the doors were already open or opened at that moment — something investigators are working to determine.

The woman sustained serious injuries to multiple parts of her body and, at one point, lost consciousness. She was taken to hospital in critical condition – but conscious. By later afternoon, authorities no longer feared for her life.

A second woman, 42 years old, who was inside the garage and is said to own the dogs, tried to intervene and was also bitten. She suffered injuries to her forearm and was treated in hospital.

Police arrived at the scene and found the situation still dangerous, with the initial victim lying on the ground and at risk of being attacked again. Officers made the decision to put down two of the dogs that remained aggressive. The third dog had already returned inside the building.

Later Wednesday, authorities met with the woman responsible for the dogs, but for now there is no judicial case against her.

An investigation is ongoing to determine exactly what led to the attack. Police are working to speak with victims and witnesses, and potentially review security footage.
