Montreal’s BIXI bike-sharing service listed in TIME’s best inventions

Montreal’s BIXI bike-sharing service was inducted into TIME magazine’s Best Inventions Hall of Fame on Thursday.

Over the years, TIME has set out to determine the best inventions of the year in consumer technology, medical science, and basic industry.

Thursday, TIME highlighted the most iconic inventions over the past 25 years, and Montreal’s BIXI bike-sharing made the list as it “revolutionized the trend” of bike-sharing, according to TIME.

“When lots of people use a communal resource—like, say, a cheap public bicycle-rental program—they tend to abuse it. So when the city of Montreal built its Public Bike System, nicknamed BIXI, the designers packed in all the technology they could find, in a desperate attempt to out-engineer human iniquity,” said TIME.

BIXI was also noted to pave the way for other bike-sharing services around the world due to the added tech it added to its service, like RFID tags, which made the bikes trackable, and solar-powered docking stations.

“Being recognized by TIME confirms that innovation born in Canada can have a global reach. We are proud to show that local solutions can transform everyday life and inspire cities around the world. It’s a day of great joy and pride, not only for our team, but also for Montreal, for Quebec and for bike sharing around the world!” said Christian Vermette, the General Manager of BIXI Montréal.

BIXI was honoured alongside the Roomba, YouTube, the iPhone, the Large Hadron Collider, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and so much more. To see all of TIME’s iconic inventions, click here.
